As well as many house portraits, I’m also often commissioned to create exhibits for museums and stately homes. Last year I was asked to create a model of the famous Rockingham Castle in Leicestershire for their 950th anniversary celebrations. It shows the castle as it was in the 13th century. Using a written survey from the year 1250, a scale drawing made in 1644, OS maps, aerial photos and a Lidar survey I spent weeks piecing together a possible layout for the buildings and landscape of the castle. With some features like the famous great gate remaining from the period I was able to design and finally build all of the structures on the site. I took inspiration from castles of a similar period and layout such as Trematon Castle, Wiston, Wallingford, Launceston and Windsor.

I’m so grateful to the owners of Rockingham, Elizabeth and James Saunders Watson for giving me the opportunity to create this piece for them. The model is now on public display at the castle
