2022

I’ve been working on a project since January unlike any other I have ever been involved with.  This has been a fascinating journey from devastation to a rebirth, literally rising from the ashes.

After a totally engulfing fire swept through a large family home in Northamptonshire the owners were devastated to have lost everything. In under two hours the house was destroyed with nothing left but remains of the walls. With the house gone I was approached by the son of the owner to create a model of  the building as it had been. I’ve built many models of lost buildings for museums but never had to survey the remains of a house before. I was shocked by the ferocity of the fire and couldn’t believe that huge iron beams had actually melted and sagged in the heat of the blaze.

Capturing the dimensions of the house was straight forward enough, but what lay ahead I had not really taken in to begin with. It was the lost details which my client wanted me to recreate which were going to be the real challenge. It’s difficult to imagine the grief of losing everything like this, and this model has become part of that grieving process for the family and hopefully some form of consolation.

The whole family miss their home more than can be put into words and hopefully the model will be a happy reminder of the best of times.
