It is said that a home becomes an extension of those who have lived in it. Owners leave their marks. This is equally true for urban terraced houses and spectacular stately homes. Buildings are adapted, modernised and refurbished by successive owners. Many of us have stripped a room of old wallpaper to discover layers beneath, previous papers and patterns, marking decades of changing fashions in taste and interior design. Some buildings also bear the scars of their lives on the outside. It can be difficult to spot subtle changes in brick patterns and colours, ghostly marks of structures removed, holes in the walls from absent downpipes. It’s not often that much time is spent gazing up at your own house, but when the building is recreated in miniature observing these signs and symbols of change becomes a point of fascination. A way to look deeper into the soul of the building.
